As the 2023 Fantasy Football season comes to an end, I like to take a look back at how players finished, while it’s still fresh in my mind. Of course, there will be a plethora of changes before the 2024 NFL season begins, which can dramatically change rankings. But as of the end of most fantasy leagues at week 17 of the NFL, here are my top 5 ranked quarterbacks, for 2024.

Josh Allen-Buffalo Bills

At the top of the list is Josh Allen. Allen was tied for 2nd in total turnovers with 16 INTs and 3 fumbles lost. He is trending down in total passing yards, total passing TDs, total rushing yards, and thus total fantasy points, over the past 3 years. Despite all of this, I still believe Allen to be the #1 fantasy quarterback going into the 2024 season. The entire NFL was down a bit offensively in 2023. It’s also important to remember that the best fantasy players are not always the best in-game players. I believe this to be the case with Allen. He did have an astounding 15 rushing TDs, tied with Jalen Hurts for the most among QBs. Next was Joshua Dobbs, with only 6 rushing TDs. Those 15 rushing TDs helped keep Allen atop of all players, in fantasy points. Allen finished 7th in 2023 in total passing yards, with 3,947 and 4th among QBs in total rushing yards, with 457. Allen ranked 7th in total passing TDs, with 27 to go along with his 15 rushing TDs. I foresee Allen to have somewhat similar stats in 2024, and be the #1 ranked fantasy quarterback, despite all his deficiencies. I’m also assuming the Bills will look to keep the likes of Stefon Diggs happy and in the line up, as well as make improvements on the O-line and in the run game.

Jalen Hurts-Philadelphia Eagles

#2 is Jalen Hurts. It may seem quite lazy to project 2023’s top 2 finishing ranked fantasy quarterbacks, as 2024’s top 2 ranked QBs going into the season, but I can’t see it changing, baring some major roster changes on either of their teams. Like Allen, Hurts also had 19 turnovers, tied for 2nd most turnovers for QBs, but with 14 INTs, and 5 lost fumbles. Hurts is able to overcome those turnovers in fantasy by passing for 3,803 yards and 23 TDs, and rushing for 601 yards and 15 TDs. Hurts’ statistics are very comparable to Allen’s. In fact, Hurts’ 356 total fantasy points, separated him by only less than 1 fantasy point per game, to Allen. Both Allen and Hurts are duel threat QBs, who not only take off running to extend a play, when no receivers appear to be open, but also have designed runs for them. Those rushing yards and TDs put both QBs ahead of the pack, most weeks. Hurts could really be a 1B to Allen, but I’m going to go ahead and put him at 2, by the slimmest of margins.

Brock Purdy-San Francisco 49ers

I’ve got Brock Purdy at #3. Purdy is finishing up his first complete season as an NFL quarterback and continues to impress. Tua Tagovailoa led the league in passing yards with 4,451, but Purdy only trailed by 171 yards in 89 less attempts. Purdy had a tough day in week 16 against the Baltimore Ravens, one of the league’s top defenses, but bounced back with a strong performance the following week, which is what Purdy does. He doesn’t get rattled for long. He stays calm and collect, which is one reason he was able to compile 31 passing TDs, only one behind league leading Dak Prescott. He’s got plenty of weapons to utilize, and will be in the MVP conversations again in 2024. I see Purdy improving upon his 2023 season, and surpassing those fantasy point totals in 2024.

Lamar Jackson-Baltimore Ravens

At #4 is Lamar Jackson. Like Allen and Hurts, Jackson is the prototypical dual threat quarterback, which translates to fantasy point potential. Jackson has a good chance of being MVP of the 2023 NFL season. His 3,678 passing yards and 24 TDs, and 821 rushing yards with 5 TDs to add, made him an excellent fantasy option in 2023. Jackson has been hindered with injury the past couple of years making him a little bit of a risk, but when he stays healthy, he’s one of the best. Jackson’s game seems to have evolved a bit in 2023, with a career high in passing yards. Even though Jackson rushed for a league leading yards among QBs, he did not top 1,000 rushing yards like he did in 2019 and 2020. I think Jackson and the Ravens are working on him being a little bit more of a pocket passer, which may keep him healthier, and prolong his career. I see Jackson having another huge fantasy year in 2024.

C.J. Stroud-Houston Texans

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I like C.J. Stroud at #5. As a rookie, Stroud was a top 4 fantasy quarterback before getting hurt in week 14, keeping him out for that game plus two. Stroud still managed to rack up 3,844 passing yards with 21 TDs (not including game 17). Typically, rookie quarterbacks do not make good fantasy quarterbacks, but Stroud was an exception to the rule. The Texans prove to be an up and coming offense under 1st year head coach Demeco Ryans. Stroud had plenty of weapons with wide receivers Nico Collins, rookie Tank Dell and Robert Woods. Newly acquired TE Dalton Shultz, and running backs Devin Singletary and Dameon Pierce also helped Stroud to boost the Texans new offense. I believe Stroud will only get better in 2024, after a year under his belt and time to jell with these weapons and within the offense.

Honorable Mentions

  1. Patrick Mahomes-KC Chiefs: He’s too good to be listed any lower, needs WR help.
  2. Dak Prescott-Dallas Cowboys: High power offense. Can Dak do it again in 2024?
  3. Justin Fields-Chicago Bears: Dual thread QB, needs consistency within organization.
  4. Aaron Rodgers-NY Jets: Completely changes dynamics of NY’s offense.
  5. Jordan Love-GB Packers: Top 5 in 2023 breakout year. I need to see it again.

I will be looking to make changes, if necessary, throughout the off season, as NFL roster changes arise.

  1. Hi Mike, I always find this a little tricky, maybe I overthink my fantasy teams. But finding your article here has certainly helped me have some clarity on my picks, as you rightly mention and I think I for one forget sometimes, the best in-game players are not always the best ones to pick in a fantasy team.

Thank you for the detail in this article and for making this process a bit easier for someone like me, it’s still always fun though!

    • Ryan,

Thanks for the vote of confidence! Drafting a fantasy team can definitely be tricky.  I’m glad my article provided some insight on how to navigate your next draft.  You are right, though, it still is always fun to speculate, make predictions, and then see how it all turns out throughout a season.
